Yukimi lanterns are identified by their round, hexagonal or octagonal roof (Kasa) for holding snow in winter. It is because of this that they are referred to as snow viewing lanterns. The Stepped Roof lantern is suited to a wide range of areas of the landscape garden, place directly on the ground or on a flat stone, near a pond or path.
