The lions are always presented in pairs (yin & yang), with the female (Yin) on the left and the male (Yang) on the right. The female has a cub under her left paw, representing nurture and the cycle of life. The male lion is almost identical, but has his right paw on a globe which represents him feeling the pulse of earth. Symbolically the female protects those dwelling inside, while the male protects the structure. They are often seen sitting on each side of an entrance to restaurants, hotels, more traditionally seen in front of imperial places. Believed to have powerful protective benefits.
